Performance based sponsorship

In this post, we are going to talk about pitching and getting performance based sponsors.  Performance based sponsors pay you on how well you did on the track or how well you did promoting their products or business.  It could also be other, measurement/metric based goals.  You can get really creative with this.

Performance based sponsorship can be a good way to get your foot in the door with a new sponsor.  They will more easily know what is in it for them.  This can even be for a fall back offer for a sponsor that is on the fence on sponsoring you or not.

I don’t recommend getting all your money based off pure performance sponsorship.  You will need base money for the deal, and money to cover paint and decals.

Step 1 – Register a domain name ( What is a domain name link ).  If you buy you website from us, we will help you with this. (Click Here)
Tips:

  • Try to get a .Com domain.  If a .Com domain isn’t available the next best is a .Net or .Org.  We recommend staying away from the others.
  • Don’t put dashes in your domain name like Visit-My-Race-Team.Com.  If you really want to, only use one dash.  Just think about how you would tell people about your website.  Will they remember the dashes or forget to type them.
  • Long domain names are okay.  The short ones can be hard to remember.  JayHallRacing.Com might be easier to remember than JHRacing.com.
  • We use Godaddy.com for our domain name registrations ( Get the domain you really want with Domain Buy Service from from GoDaddy.com! ) – Don’t forget to do the auto renew!  Again if you buy from us we will take care of all of this for you.

Step 2 – Find a good hosting company – Our hosting partners provide great servers, at a reasonable cost and with good service.
Tips:

  • Make sure the company has good support.
  • Don’t use the free blogging sites.  If you have a very very limited budget it might be okay to test the waters.  Be prepared to lose all the work you put into a free site.
  • For 90% of you, you can find a good hosting company for under $10 per month.  If you go with us, we can get you way under that.
  • Make sure you hosting company supports WordPress.  We recommend that everyone build their sites with WordPress.  If you host with us, we will install WordPress for you and help you learn how to use it.
  • If you don’t go with us we recommend these hosing companies – BlueHost Web Hosting $6.95 Per Month / Free Domain or HostGator Looking for Web Hosting With Quality Support? 24/7 Support Via Phone, Live Chat, and Email!

Step 3 – Build you site with WordPress – Once you have your domain name and hosting; you can quickly setup your site with WordPress.  We recommend that you look at the many free and premium templates available for WordPress.  Find one that closely matches what you want your site to look like.  Don’t worry… if you don’t like it templates are easy to change.

Tips:
  • Find a template that you like ( Here is a link to templates we think you might like)
  • Free templates are good but the premium templates can really set your site apart and make it more unique.  If you are just starting out, I would stick to a free template.
  • Write down what you want to say on your website (yes on paper).  You can save yourself a lot of time pre-planing what you want your site to look like.
  • Don’t build too many pages.  It is best if you stay under 5 pages.  Most sites could just have four (Home with news blog, bio, schedule, photos and media)
  • Check out our lessons ( coming soon link here) on how to build your WordPress site or just have us do it.  We do this all the time, so we can get this all jump started for you.

Racing Marketing 101

Welcome to the first post for this site.  Our goal is to help you better market you and your race team.  This series is intended for people just getting started in racing marketing.  We hope you will find the information useful.  Please leave a comment or send us an email to give us feedback.

The first point I would like to make.  It is not about what is in it for you.  Of course, our goal is to get you the money you need to race.  To do that, you need to understand what’s in this for your sponsor.   If you start focusing on what you can bring to a potential sponsor, everything will change.

Think about these questions:

  • What can I do to help my potential sponsors?
  • Who can I share that sponsors message with on and off the track?
  • What will I do for my sponsor?  ( Hand out a sales flyer at the track, give our coupons, make my car available at their business….
  • Link to their Webpage from Your Racing Website.
As you think and write down your ideas, we can use this information to build your Sponsorship proposal.  Keep a Journal or racing notebook handy to write down your ideas.

Quick Tip:
- You will get ideas from time to time on how to promote your sponsor or other ideas for your race team.  Don’t loose those ideas.  Keep something handy to write them down in or better yet on your smart phone or computer.
- Put yourself in a potential sponsors shoes, what would you want if you were going put some of your hard earned money into a racers hands.
